American Dance Institute to Move to Catskill in May 2018

American Dance Institute (ADI), originally located in Rockville, MD., is set to move its headquarters to Catskill to a waterfront site on the Catskill Creek, formerly a lumberyard.

“The original owner of the property was Steven Dunn, the building was purchased by the American Dance Institute in August,” said Village of Catskill Community Development Coordinator Nancy Richards. ADI plans to break ground in May with the help of a $500,000 Empire State Development grant from New York State.

The $4,000,000 first phase of the project will include the construction of a large, flexible theater and housing for up to 20 resident artists who participate in the institute’s Incubator program to develop new works. The second phase of the project calls for transforming three adjacent barns into usable space. Ideas for phase two include adding a dance studio, restaurant/commercial space, public green space, and a ferry dock.

American Dance Institute considered seeking out a space in the Catskills after Executive Director Adrienne Willis’ colleagues suggested she look in Hudson. This is where Catskill made its entrance. When ADI couldn’t find what they were looking for, realtor and new business owner of The New York Restaurant in Catskill, Natasha Witka, showed them the space and they fell in love with it, according to Richards.

An event is expected to be hosted for the community during the first phase of the project in May 2016.

ADI is expected to start their summer programming in 2018, with performances running from Memorial Day through Columbus Day. Performances will take place on alternate weekends or every weekend. Additional parking will be provided after a building is demolished due to foundational problems.
